Subject: Hundreds of Dollars of Interest on a Cancelled Card
Comment:
Make sure your card is cancelled, like REALLY cancelled.
In Dec. 2006 I cancelled my Chase United card. The phone customer service people told me it was cancelled. I think I had to send a letter as well. Who remembers, it was so long ago? Then, in July of 2008 I got a call from a collections agency regarding this "cancelled" card. They said I owed $300 in fees and if I paid immediately, I only had to pay $150. If I waited to contact Chase, I'd have to pay the whole amount. It was so absurd, I thought it was a scam, but I was applying for apartments and needed good credit. So I paid it and THEN contacted Chase. Turns out my $5 netflix account had come out of my card AFTER it was supposed to be cancelled and had collected $300 interest (dropped to $150 since I payed the collection agency immediately) in the year and a half since I'd closed the card. Chase said they'd been sending me online statements each month, for a year and a half. I never got the statements and thought the account was closed and my balance was zero. But of course, it's there word against mine.
Chase gave me a fax number to dispute the fees. I faxed my documentation and received a $150 credit on my checking account. I was annoyed that this was such an issue and glad that it was taken care of.
In Jan. 2009, I got a letter from Chase, saying I owe $68 in overdue fees. When I called today, I was informed that the $150 credit was NOT a refund but a payment reversal, and in July, when they told me my account was now $0 and closed, it was BEFORE they applied the reversal. So now that $150 (in nothing but fees!) has been collecting more fees, from July 2008 till Jan. 2009, so I owed $220. Again, where have my last six months of statements gone?
I am given the same fax number to protest. So what, they can REFUND my $220, only to send me a letter in August saying I now owe $400?? This should be illegal. It's dishonest and character assaulting (I recently applied for something and was mysteriously denied on the basis of the "bad" credit I knew I shouldn't have had. It all makes sense now.)
I was told, by Chase, that this account was closed three different times, in three different years. After 2 hours on the phone with five reps today, I paid the whole thing, just to not have to deal with this anymore. I'll check back in a month to make sure the account is closed. I shouldn't have to do this, but I certainly don't TRUST Chase's word. This has been an endless nightmare. It's like Chase won't LET me close the account. And open accounts mean fees for nothing!!!
